The Telangana government has recently issued an order to make Telugu compulsory as the second language for all the schools in Telangana. This is made mandatory for all schools affiliated to CBSE, ICSE, and IB board for classes 1 to 10th. The same shall be applicable from this academic year. 

The official notice said:

“The violation of rules to implement Telugu as a compulsory subject from class 1-10 from academic year 2022-23 onwards for all management and different Board-affiliated schools (CBSE, ICSE, IB and other Boards) in Telangana state will be viewed seriously and necessary actions will be taken as per the Act and guidelines given by the Telangana State Govt”

The Telangana government has also designed and developed books separately for Telugu speaking students and non-Telugu speaking students. 

For the students who don’t have Telugu as their mother tongue, the books are:

  • ‘Tenepalukulu’ for Classes I to V 
  • ‘Vennela’ for Classes VI to X 

For the students who have Telugu as their mother tongue, the books are:

  • ‘Jabili’ for Classes I to V
  • ‘Nava Vasantham’ for Classes VI, VII, and VIII 
  • ‘Singidi’ for Class IX and X

These books can also be found on the Telangana State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) website – http://scert.telangana.gov.in.

The circular issued by the Telangana government also said that the violating rules to implement Telugu as a compulsory subject for classes 1 to 10th from academic year 2022-23 will be viewed seriously. And not following the same will lead to taking necessary actions as per the guidelines mentioned in Telangana (Compulsory Teaching and Learning of Telugu in Schools) Act 2018. Last year the language was made compulsory till IX class in all schools in Telangana and this year, it has extended till 10 standard and the board examinations.
