Doon was a dream of Satish Ranjan Das, a lawyer from Calcutta and advocate-general of Bengal, who in 1927 became a member of the Viceroy’s Executive Council of Lord Irwin on the condition that he would use the prestige of this position to raise funds for a new type of school in India. He decided to name the new school “Doon”, as it was situated in the Doon Valley. 

In 1935, the Viceroy, Lord Willingdon, presided over the formal opening of the school.
